NOTICES

Glasgow Radiocarbon Inter-Comparison 2021

Updated 6 July 2021

A message from Marian Scott and Philip Naysmith:

The next global radiocarbon inter-comparison was planned for 2019 but was delayed due to the Covid pandemic.   We are now ready to dispatch the samples (at last). Samples will be sent in in the next few weeks (using a courier), with 6 months for return of the results.  This exercise is for AMS facilities, but we will endeavour, to send a smaller number of radiometric -size samples.

Samples:

All of the samples are natural (wood, bone, peat and grain), some are known age, and overall their age spans approx. 40,000BP to modern.  In the case of peat, the sample will have been pre-treated to humic acid, but other samples will require pre-treatment.

We have designed a study with two groups of samples.  The first group is typical of the samples provided in SIRI, where the volume of material being provided will be sufficient to make a few repeat measurements.  In the second group, we will provide a quantity of material, sufficient to allow AMS labs to run (and report) multiple measurements from different wheels/batches over the space of the six months experimental phase.  It is intended that sufficient material will remain to allow labs to use these as internal quality assurance samples.

What should you do?

If you have not already done so and you are interested in receiving samples, then please email marian.scott@glasgow.ac.uk or philip.naysmith@glasgow. ac.uk.

Position: Leader of The National Laboratory for Age Determination at NTNU University Museum. Application deadline 5th June 2022.

UC Irvine

Research specialist position opportunity - MIni CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) for Climate Change and Air Quality Research

The W. M. Keck Carbon Cycle Accelerator Mass Spectrometer (KCCAMS) facility at the University of California, Irvine is expanding its analytical capabilities, including the detection of radiocarbon (14C) in microgram-sized samples, with the addition of a MIni CArbon DAting System (MICADAS) to support climate change and air quality research. The MICADAS will be accompanied by multiple devices that facilitate the direct injection of CO2 to the spectrometer and the automated production of graphite targets. Funding for instrumentation and a new specialist has been granted by the U.S. National Science Foundation.

Please apply online at https://recruit.ap.uci.edu/apply/JPF07223 with a detailed CV, a statement that outlines research experience, skills, and interests, and mentoring experience, and a list of 3-5 references (please do not solicit letters).

uOttawa Lalonde AMS facility

The André E. Lalonde AMS national facility at the University of Ottawa has an open position for a Research Scientist in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Physics and Applications. The position is broadly defined, however, the maintenance, development and improvement of two AMS systems (HVE and brand spankin’ new MICADAS) in support of the AEL-AMS strategic plan is required. Expertise in future development of our 3MV HVE system for the measurement of actinides and cosmogenic isotopes is preferable.

The Radiocarbon Dating group conducts radiocarbon AMS and stable isotope ratio analyses for researchers around the world.  The laboratory serves to promote the CAIS missions of enhancing the global reputation of UGA as a research institution, providing quality analytical services to researchers, and preparing Georgia students for STEM careers. The lab is a fee-for-service analytical testing facility serving the UGA research community and external clientele including, but not limited to, academic institutions, government agencies, and private companies worldwide. The successful candidate will be involved in sample preparation, method development, client communication, data analysis, and report preparation. The incumbent will work closely with clients and collaborators to develop tailored methods and novel approaches in the areas of stable isotope geochemistry, paleodietary studies, radiocarbon dating, and other analytical methods. The appointee is also expected to establish independence in research design and execution and publish in peer-reviewed literature. The duties also involve management of analytical projects and laboratory staff; creating reports and invoicing clients for services; tracking laboratory budget and expenditures and pursuing external funding.

The preferred qualifications are a PhD in chemistry/geochemistry or related fields plus 5 years of experience in geochemistry laboratory operation, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing the instrumentation.  Background in preparing and analyzing samples for radiocarbon dating. The successful candidate will have effective interpersonal skills; excellent oral communication and ability to present the results of research in scientific conferences; excellent written communication and ability to write proposals for external funding; ability to supervise students and technicians.

The application packet should include a cover letter, a current Resume/CV, a writing sample and contact information for three references. Complete applications should be submitted online at https://www.ugajobsearch.com/postings/214741. Direct questions to Dr. Ravi Prasad, PhD.
